Tempest's Tantalizing History

Time flies when you're having fun and we've been having fun since 1986. Back in the days of bad hairstyles, pastel clothing and the birth of rave music, Tempest Car Hire opened our doors for business to take on the car rental big guns. We saw a gap and went for it: The market needed a car rental provider who was super economical and offered personalised service with a smile. And our clients have been smiling ever since, after all, who can resist great rates, new cars and world class service?

What makes us tick

Your way to a great day. That means servicing cost conscious, smart corporate and leisure markets who want to save on their travel budgets. A narrowing of the economy, both locally and internationally and the substantial increase in car rental competitors have led us to rethink our positioning strategy. Today, we focus specifically on being a price sensitive car rental company and are totally committed to cutting costs to offer great value for your money each time you rent with us.

Our Connections

The success of this small little fox terrier of a company was noticed by the heavies and we got snapped up as a really valuable proposition by the Imperial Holdings Group in 1991. This was a pretty cool move as it enabled us to expand our infrastructure and gain accessibility to a much larger fleet pool to service our expanding client base. Did we mention that we are one of South Africa's leading car rental companies? Yip, we've become a heavy but still offer that same personalised service while keeping our rates economical.

Howdy Partner

Things are always better in pairs, like Batman and Robin or fish and chips! At Tempest Car Hire we have created strategic alliances with various partners to make your travel experience more pleasurable. Our partners represent all spheres of the South African leisure industry and are committed to helping you find the best travel and accommodation deals around. When you book your travel arrangement through their website, you may very often also book car hire directly at the same time.

Doing it Right

We ain't no wild cowboys, Tempest Car Hire is a member of SAVRALA (South African Vehicle Rental and Leasing Association) and maintains the strict code of conduct necessary for members of the Association.

Corporate Social Investment Activities

Tempest Car Hire is a proud supporter of the Imperial & Ukhamba Community Development Trust and their development initiatives at schools in the Orange Farm area. Beyond Tempest’s annual contribution to the Ukhamba fund, we undertake our own initiatives, in association with Ukhama Community Trust, to further supplement and support the foundation phase schools within the programme. One of which was the sponsoring of a library at the Retkhutlile Primary School which was built from scratch and stocked with thousands of books, reading aids, a TV and new furniture to enable a comfortable learning environment for the children. The library was officially opened on the 1st of June 2011 and will receive Tempest’s ongoing support to spark the children’s passion for reading. More recently, in association with Gauteng Cricket and KFC Mini Cricket, Tempest has launched the KFC Mini Cricket programme at Rekgutlile and Tshepona Primary Schools, with further schools to be identified in future. Weekly cricket coaching clinics are held at these schools every Tuesday and Thursday and the children learn basic skills from batting to bowling and fielding in a safe, entertaining and stimulating environment. KFC Mini Cricket is more than just about the game - it’s an opportunity to teach children valuable life lessons and social skills. Other corporate social investment activities include:-

  • Contribution to Aids Week Bannerthon every year
  • An ongoing association with Dreamfields SA
  • Limited offering of complimentary rental days to identified charities

  • Can Small Businesses Merge and Acquire?

The answer is definitely yes. The first advantage that arises from merging is the increase of economies of scale. Economies of scale do not only increase in terms of the balance sheet but more so in terms of the human resource. For small businesses it is also likely that the balance sheets may have no much glory to show, however, the different shareholders may combine their intellect, experience and that of their personnel to develop a much stronger business.

  • Analysing the markets of your business

It is very important to analyse your markets whether you are starting a business or you are in business already. Existing businesses continuously work on budgets/sales forecasts which should generally be influenced by the prevailing behavior of the market among other factors. You cannot derive your forecasts purely on targets you want to achieve, you have to check your targets against the reality of the market situation.

Considering the info about your markets is not an excuse for you not to achieve sales forecasts, however, it is a way to ensure that you can marry the right strategy to achieving your targets by using marketing analogies to derive your strategies.

    A good market analysis must consider the following;

  • Risk Management in Small Businesses

In a perfect world each individual would jump at an opportunity of running a business free of risks and uncertainties, unfortunately this is not the case, behind every success there is a painful story.

Starting a small business comes with lots of challenges; entrepreneurs spend time and money developing a good business plan that is fitting for their prospective business. However, the management of risk is often overlooked by entrepreneurs who mistakenly believe that the loss is best dealt with once it has materialized.

Risk refers to a possible loss which may arise from operations, people, process, systems, and internal as well as external events.  Once these are overlooked in your business operations they will interfere with your company’s financial stability.
